We are continuing our post-mortem of the recently ended PSL season. Digging through some numbers, we came across some interesting stats that suggested how weird (possibly bad) this season has been. Sundowns’ dominance and the Royal AM issue aside, we saw a general lack of season-on-season improvements on a team level. We asked five questions. Let’s dig in
How many teams improved their points from last season?
3 - Only 3 teams had more points this season compared to last, making this the lowest number of “improvements” in PSL history ( Pirates, Richards Bay & Sekhukhune).
Fewest number of point “improvements” in a season:
2024/25 - 3 teams improved*
2002/3, 2003/4, 2019/20, 2020/21 - 4 teams
Historical average - 6 teams
*The Royal AM expulsion plays a big role here, with many teams not getting the chance to play for points against them or seeing points won deducted.
How many teams improved their goals from last season"?
3 = Only three teams had more goals this season compared to last, namely Sundowns (+13), Sekhukhune (+8) and AmaZulu (+5), the lowest number of goal “improvements” in PSL history.
Fewest number of goal “improvements” in a season:
2024/25 - 3 teams improved their goals*
2002/3, 2003/4, 2019/20, 2020/21 - 4 teams
Insert Royal AM caveat.
How many teams had a positive goal difference versus last season?
4 - Only 4 teams ended the season with a positive goal difference, the worst tally for a season in PSL history.
Seasons with the fewest positive goal difference teams:
2024/25 - 4 teams*
2004/05, 2009/10, 2010/11, 2014/15, 2017/18, 2022/23 - 6 teams
Historical average: 7 teams
How many teams won more than 2 games in a row at any point?
4 - Only 4 teams won more than 2 games in a row at any point this season, namely Sundowns (best run was 10 games), Pirates (7), Magesi (4) and Stellenbosch (3).
How many teams have won 3+ games in a row in the last few seasons?
2024/25 - 4 teams*
2023/24 - 10 teams
2022/23 - 11 teams
Average last six years: 8 teams
How many teams won more than two away games all season?
2+ - Only 9 teams won more than 2 away games throughout the 2024/25 campaign - only the 3rd time in PSL history that fewer than 10 teams won 3+ away games.
2024/25 - 6 teams won just 2 away games all season*
2012/13 - 7 teams
2003/4 - 7 teams
